Work location: London, UK
Job title: Project manager
Company: The Economist Group
Degree : BSc Business & management (accounting)
What my job involved
I was responsible for developing a process to formalise the internship recruitment process across the Group. This required the ability to work with people from different backgrounds and at all levels, excellent organisational and planning skills and the ability to understand how to engage and attract potential interns.
What I did to get the job
Networking through friends, family and previous colleagues. At the same time, used traditional methods, internet, papers, agencies, etc in my initial search for jobs. The involvement in part-time jobs has meant I have been able to have a progressive climb up the job market ladder.
What I gained from the UK experience
It has built up confidence to work in an international market. I have also developed business/corporate skills: IT, communication, analysis, business writing in much more depth. The various qualifications I have obtained and the part-time work has contributed significantly to my career progression.
My top tips for international students
- Previous work experience is key in demonstrating the competencies and qualities employers ask for
- Also networking with everyone you know
