Tamara McCarthy-Baker

03 Jul Caseworker – Tamara McCarthy-Baker

Job title: Caseworker
Employer: David Lammy – Member of Parliament for Tottenham
Studying:
LLB Law with Professional Placement

A brief outline of my role…
I deal with the requests we get from constituents via email, post and the phone. These issues cover a variety of areas such as immigration, housing, and crime. I also support Mr Lammy or the senior caseworker at advice surgery appointments with constituents.

I love working here because…
Every day in the office is different. You don’t know what requests you will get from constituents. Working in Parliament has provided me with a range of opportunities the majority of the public would not be able to experience.

My proudest achievement or experience in this role…
Helping to prevent someone with a child and terminally ill wife from being deported.

How I have developed professionally since I began working here…
One of the skills I have improved during my placement is communication by talking to people from various backgrounds, listening actively, and trying to understand their needs. I’ve also improved on my independent research skills and keeping on top of current affairs. Furthermore, this placement has helped my time management and I’ve really learned to be flexible. Lastly, I’ve learned to accept accountability for my actions and words.

Advice I’d give to students wanting to work in this industry/sector…
Be patient. Be eager to learn and try to get as much our of the experience as possible.
