Nationality: Nepalese
Work location: UK
Job title: Associate Study Manager
Company: GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)
Degree: Biomedical Science
Year of Graduation: 2015

Why I loved it:

It was a great opportunity to learn in depth about how the clinical trial studies are conducted by one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). It was also a good chance to network with various GSK colleagues and to learn about their role/experience within the company, which was beneficial for my career planning.

My best experience/greatest achievement:

It’s very hard to pick one because every day I learned so many new things. I’d say every day in the company was a great learning experience for me.

What I learned:

I learned the many different things that need to be done in order to market a drug and how various sectors work together to achieve the goal as a company.

About my experience/greatest achievement

GSK is a science-led global healthcare company, researching and developing a broad range of innovative products in three primary areas of Pharmaceuticals, Vaccines and Consumer Healthcare. GSK have a significant global presence with commercial operations in more than 150 countries, a network of 84 manufacturing sites in 36 countries and large R&D centres in the UK, USA, Spain, Belgium and China.

My role was to ensure that the clinical trial studies were running smoothly. This was done mainly by helping the team with drafting/checking the necessary documents, presenting clinical data to the colleagues during the regular meetings, communicating with the Local Operating Companies around the globe via telephone/email, checking up on any protocol deviation issues, producing and sending newsletters for the sites/hospitals and many more. It was, therefore, very crucial for me to stay up-to-date with what was happening within the trial. My tips for other students are: don’t be afraid of asking questions if you’re not sure with anything that you’re not familiar with, and utilise the opportunity to expand on your networking skills.
