Job title: IT Student Support Technician
Type of position: Placement
Company: Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare NHS
Degree: Business Computing (e-Commerce)

Why I loved it:

“The most enjoyable part of my job was to go out on site visits with my manager as I got to learn a lot from an experienced manager that has worked for the NHS for the past 12 years. Something else I really enjoyed, which you might find weird, was to get work in on time as it gives a positive image of students undertaking placements, and trust me head of your department really will love you. Another task at work that I really liked was to build laptops using different images as it was quite challenging to remember different platforms for different makes.”

My best experience/greatest achievement:

“The greatest achievement of my placement was to be given a place in the IT team as a part-time IT technician, after my contract ended. Head of IT and my manger were really proud of me so they gave me an Amazon voucher to thank me for my hard work.”

What I learned:

“Responsibilities included taking the initiative to problem solve technical issues raised by users over the phone. The main focus was on logging calls from users and at the same time multitasking to come up with a solution to the problem. Another of my tasks was to ensure projects were fully achieved with user or client feedback, providing them with an appropriate user guide of the system developed. One of the most challenging tasks for me was to make sure instruction or training was applied correctly to small or major tasks. This was because I wanted to show passion and motivation to work for the IT department.”

About my experience/Tips for students:

“Make the most of it. A placement really helps you with your future career and gives you an idea of what you want to do after graduating. It was difficult at the beginning to find a placement but I didn’t give up and finally got one with the help of the PCC. If you really want to succeed in life do a placement!”
