Work location: Ealing, London, UK
Type of role: Legal Assistant
Company: London Borough of Ealing
Year of Graduation: 2016
Why I loved it:
The one thing I loved about working in Ealing is the genuinely inviting environment within the team. I learnedt a wealth of both practical and theoretical knowledge of the legal profession because of the continuous support that was given to me.
My best experience/greatest achievement:
The best experience has to be the moment you are handed your own case, with your name listed as the principal fee earner coupled with the client advice meeting that follows shortly after. Successfully completing a case is the bonus, the great achievement.
What I learned:
Dealing with clients, defendants and court staff daily ensured I learned everything from professional etiquette to administrative excellence to complicated court procedures. I am leaving this placement fully equipped to embark on my career.
About my experience/Tips for students:
My team dealt with legal work relating to the social services and education departments’ statutory powers and duties. This included proceedings in the family court, high court, and tribunals within the council. They provided legal advice to client departments including Children and Adult Services and statutory panels, advising specifically on policies and procedures.
On a day to day basis I was assigned a wide range of tasks which I worked on independently, allowing me to manage my own workload in order to meet the assigned deadlines, never being left to drown. Some of my key responsibilities included:
- Drafting court applications and letters
- Arranging DNA, Drug and Alcohol Tests
- Attending court hearings to assist barristers
- Liaising with police, hospitals and emergency services regarding sharing of information
- File management and administrative tasks
Halfway through my placement I was allocated my own cases in which I assumed full responsibility and gave independent advice to clients! (Very Exciting)
This placement was truly is the best of both worlds. I got to see and participate in the work of solicitors and barristers, giving me clarity and insight into the legal career. My top tip would be to APPLY FOR EALING. I managed to secure a mini pupillage and summer work experience through this placement and I could not have asked for a better place to work.
