Job title: Business Analyst
Type of position: Placement
Company: GlaxoSmithKline
Degree: Business Computing

Why I loved it:

“In my previous roles in retail, work became very repetitive and boring. Working at GSK was the complete opposite; I was motivated to go into work each day, learn new things and expose myself to many different areas of the business. This made me feel like the work I was doing was having a positive impact and I was achieving my goals.”

My best experience/greatest achievement:

“Other than completing a placement and obtaining a year of vital work experience, the greatest achievement was submitting the application I worked on throughout the year to the ‘Real IT Awards’ and winning the ‘Best Use of Mobile Technology Award’, GSK’s first ever award for mobile technology.”

What I learned:

“My main responsibility was project managing an iOS application that assists employees with the internal navigation around GSK sites. However, as my knowledge grew, my team had more confidence in me and I took the opportunity to work on an additional 6 projects over the year.”

About my experience/Tips for students:

“The best piece of advice I would give to students applying for a placement would be to apply early. I began applying late and by this time a lot of opportunities had already been taken. Add this to the pressure of your university workload and it can become very stressful. This approach will give you more time to complete application forms which will give you a better opportunity of securing a placement.”
