03 Aug Pursuing a PhD – Habiba Lais

Course studied: Aerospace Engineering BEng with Professional Development and Integrated Foundation Year
Year of graduation: 2016

When I left Brunel…
I was on the MEng pathway and was planning to continue to the final year and later pursue a PhD however, before I left Brunel, I presented my poster at the Brunel Engineers showcase where I met my old employer from placement year, I was offered to return to the company and pursue an industry led PhD topic.

At the moment…
I am working at Brunel Innovation Centre on industry projects whilst doing my PhD full-time which is focused on the projects that I currently work on.

How my career goals have changed…
My pathway changed as I believed I needed to complete a Masters degree before pursuing research. However, my placement year experience and contacts allowed me to progress faster into my chosen career path.

How I have developed professionally since graduating…
I currently work on different projects that relate to my PhD topic. Not only do I have an abundance of resources to progress with my research, I also gain the business/personal development aspect by taking part in project meetings, presenting at conferences, and also working in a company.

My advice to recent graduates/students graduating soon…
If you have the chance, get experience and network. The more things you experience and the more people you meet – this can shape your future pathway without you even realising.
