Job title: Human Resources Intern
Type of position: Placement
Company: CenturyLink Technology Solutions
Degree: International Business

Why I loved it:

“I loved meeting and interacting with people on a daily basis. My role was one which required me to be in constant communication with employees, members of my team and people outside of the organisation. I found this enjoyable as I came across different personalities and cultures which enabled me to really enhance my interaction skills. I also enjoyed running the recruitment process for the next interns. I was in charge of advertising the intern vacancies, arranging and conducting telephone and face to face interviews, as well as sending out contracts and offer letters. This project was really enjoyable as it gave me a sense of great responsibility, I was allowed to be creative and input new ideas into the process.”

My best experience/greatest achievement:

“One of my greatest achievements of my placement year was getting involved in a project management challenge held by the Association of Project Management (APM,) representing my company. I worked alongside four fellow interns to produce a project/service for our company in order to promote collaboration. Our project competed against different projects from other companies within the Thames Valley region and overall we made it to the finals and won 2 out of 3 awards for Best Presentation and Best Poster. This was a great achievement as all of our hard work paid off, we achieved recognition from our Managing Director and were the first set of interns to make it to the final stages, all of which has enabled us to leave a long lasting footprint in our company.”

What I learned:

“As an HR intern at CenturyLink I learned to assist the various functions within our HR department. These functions ranged from Learning and Development to Payroll. My main responsibilities included assisting with the coordination of recruitment activities, managing the company leaver’s process, managing the general HR inbox and responding to all senior managers and assisting the Learning and Development Manager.”

About my experience/Tips for students:

“My advice to students looking for placements would be to utilise the Placement and Careers Centre as much as you can. They will provide you with a lot of helpful tips and advice when it comes to choosing the right placement for you. They will also help to prepare you for interviews, assessments and will assist you throughout the whole process. They helped me and I know they will help you too!”
