30 Aug Scientist Assistant Technician – Danny Aryani

Job title: Scientist Assistant Technician
Organisation: Experimental Techniques Centre

Course studying: Electrical Engineering
Year of graduation: 2020

A brief outline of my role…
My role in each project was different, but mostly I was required to assist in preparing samples and/or doing experiments on samples. I also used Optical Microscope and Scanning Electron Microscopy to take pictures of the samples.

Why I loved working here…
I’ve always loved and enjoyed science and practical work. In this role I worked in workshops preparing, testing, and experimenting on aluminium samples, which was a combination of Engineering Science and Practical Engineering. Everyday I learnt new things, experimented on new samples, observed different reactions on metals, and basically seen the world from a different perspective.

My proudest achievement or experience in this role…
Everyday working here was a proud achievement for me, but my favourite is that I was trained to use Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

How I have developed professionally since I began working here…
I was able to manage my time efficiently to meet deadlines. I had to be very precise in what I recorded about samples. I learned about writing a scientific paper, making notes, and documenting every step of preparing samples by polishing, mounting, coating, experimenting with different chemicals and using Scanning Electron Microscopy, and a Optical Microscope. And the most important part, I have learned how to deal with stress.

My advice to students wanting to work in this industry/sector…
Prepare for a lot of work, and working at different times of the day or even night! You might work in different workshops with different machines and equipment every day, but if you enjoy learning new things and working mostly in workshops on practical tasks, then this is the perfect sector for you!
