Job title: Trainee Support Engineer
Type of position: Placement
Company: Avco Systems
BSc Computer Science (Network Computing)

Why I loved it:

“I really loved having the freedom to work on my own, but still with support and guidance from senior staff if I needed it. Being part of a team on occasions was also fantastic and really allowed for a fun and productive working environment. Gaining experience in network computing on a daily basis was great and really gave me a sense of achievement.”

My best experience/greatest achievement:

“Getting to meet and learn from very experienced employees was greatly beneficial and really showed me what to expect from my role in the future, should I return to Avco Systems, or pursue a similar role elsewhere. The highlight of my placement was seeing out my own project that involved web creation for an awarding organisation over the course of 10 months, there was a great sense of achievement upon completion.”

What I learned:

“I learned how to maintain and support communication networks within the organisation. My role included making live changes to servers, dealing with various IP’s, ensuring Firewall security, building servers and desktops then adding these to the company network, Laying cables, liaising with customers and internal staff to offer support.”

About my experience/Tips for students:

“Don’t be scared to apply for lots of jobs as most people get turned down from companies before finding a placement. 100% go for a placement if you can, the experience and knowledge gained is unquestionable and massively benefits you when returning to University for your final year.”
