When I left Brunel…
I was looking for a job. I knew it will be very hard and disappointing but I had to do it anyway. I had sent numerous applications and they were all rejecting me. No one would like to hire someone who doesn’t have any experience or a contact in the company to guarantee for him/her.

At the moment…
Luckily, I got a call from a friend working in a small consultancy office with M&E engineers. He is going to leave his position and asked if I want to replace him. I sent everything to the directors and they hired me. I worked there for 3 months. Before that experience though, I had already sent my second application to Arup, this time with a referee. They considered my application, I went through all stages and though being 30 minutes late and completely unprepared to the final interview, they were thrilled and I got the job. That’s because only 3 months of experience gives you the confidence and knowledge an employer needs in a graduate. So, I will start working at Arup in London on 18th of September as an Environmental Engineer.

How my career goals have changed…
They haven’t changed. I had to decide between finding a job and doing a PHD. But I am not that young, I need experience now, so I decided that maybe I will wait before I start a PHD.

How I have developed personally since graduating…
Again I am more confident regarding my work environment. I have familiarized myself with my subject, with working in a team, with employee meetings. I am now more confident interacting with my colleagues and the directors.

My advice to recent graduates/students graduating soon…
Don’t underestimate the opportunities you have. Even if the salary is very bad, think of it as an internship and see how it develops. At the end of the day you can stop and change whenever you want. You will only gain experience, you will not loose anything.
